MBBR Bio Media

MBBR Bio Filter Media

MBBR (Moving Bed Biofilm Reactor) Bio Filter Media is a specially designed plastic carrier used in biological wastewater treatment systems to support the growth of beneficial microorganisms (biofilm). These media enhance the biological degradation of organic matter by providing a large protected surface area for bacteria to colonize, improving treatment efficiency and reducing system size.

Key Features

  • High specific surface area (350–1200 m²/m³ depending on type)
  • Durable material – typically made from virgin HDPE (High-Density Polyethylene)
  • Lightweight – allows for good suspension and mixing
  • UV and chemical resistant
  • Non-clogging and low maintenance
  • Suitable for aerobic, anaerobic, and anoxic processes

How It Works

In an MBBR system, the bio filter media are suspended in an aerated tank where they continuously move with water flow or air agitation. Microorganisms grow on the surface of the media, forming a biofilm that consumes organic pollutants, nitrogen compounds, and other contaminants in the wastewater.

The constant motion ensures:

  • Good contact between water and biofilm
  • Self-cleaning action (excess biofilm is sloughed off)
  • High treatment capacity in a compact system
