An RO membrane housing pressure vessel is a critical component of a reverse osmosis (RO) water treatment system, designed to securely hold and protect the RO membrane element(s) while withstanding high operating pressures. These housings ensure optimal performance, leak-free operation, and longevity of the membrane inside.
The RO membrane housing (also called a pressure vessel) provides a sealed environment for the RO membrane to operate efficiently under pressure. It allows pressurized feedwater to enter, flow through the membrane, and then separate into permeate (filtered water) and concentrate (reject water).
Component | Description |
---|---|
Shell / Body | Cylindrical, high-pressure vessel made from fiberglass-reinforced plastic (FRP) |
End Caps / Heads | Removable covers at both ends to allow membrane loading/unloading. Often sealed with O-rings or locking clamps. |
Ports / Connections | Inlet, permeate, and concentrate ports allow water to enter and exit in the required flow paths. Usually threaded or flanged. |
Sealing Elements | O-rings, seats, and gaskets ensure leak-proof operation under pressure. |
Membrane Retainer / Thrust Ring | Keeps the membrane element in place and prevents it from shifting under high flow or pressure. |
Pressure Ratings | 150 psi – 1200 psi (depending on application and design) |
Material | FRP (commonly), SS 304/316 (for corrosive environments) |
Diameter | 2.5″, 4″, or 8″ standard |
Length | Accommodates 1–7 membranes per housing (or any customized design) |
Temperature Limit | Usually up to 49°C (120°F), varies by manufacturer |
End Connection Types | Side-port or end-port configurations |
By Diameter:
2.5” and 4” vessels: Used in small commercial or residential RO systems.
8” vessels: Standard in industrial and municipal RO systems.
By Pressure Rating:
Low pressure (150–300 psi): Used for brackish water.
High pressure (600–1200 psi): Used for seawater desalination or high-recovery systems.
By Port Location:
End-port: Both inlet and outlet on one or both ends.
Side-port: Inlet or outlet comes from the side; often used in multi-housing arrays for easier connection.
Applications
Desalination plants (SWRO)
Municipal water treatment
Industrial process water
Food & beverage industry
Boiler feedwater treatment
Pharmaceutical-grade water systems
